There are 3 basic shapes of yo-yo's, imperial, butterfly and modified. |

Imperial/Standard
Your classic yo-yo shape. They're good for looping tricks like "Loop the Loop."

Butterfly
They're basically inverted imperials. They have a wider slot allowing you to perform string tricks like "Man on Trapeze" and "Buddha's Revenge" easier. They're not that good for looping because of their shape.

Modified/Modern
This design has most of the weight on the rims of the yo-yo allowing longer sleeps. They have a slim shape. An all-purpose yo-yo.

The string is attached to the finger by a slip knot. To make a slip knot, you first have to make a loop (pre-made yo-yo string already has this) then draw the part of the string through the loop.

The yo-yo is attached to the string by a loop. Expand the loop with your hand and put it on the axle of the yo-yo. |

This is the simplest way to wind up a yo-yo. Wrap the string around your thumb once, drop it in the slot of the yo-yo and continue to wrap the string. |
