The throw is a very vital part of off-string. If you can't throw, you can't play. I'll go into detail how to do it via the forward pass. |

After you wind the string around the axle, you put the slip knot around your middle finger like usual. This is how you hold it before you throw. Make sure that the string runs outward around the yo-yo from the throwing finger.

Throw it out like you would if you were to do a forward pass.

Once it's almost reached the end of the string, give it a slight tug towards you and down. This will cause the yo-yo to come back in your direction.

Now grab the other end of the string with your left hand and be prepared for the landing.

As you can see the yo-yo has landed. It looks sort of like a "Man on Trapeze." You shouldn't have to move the string around much to catch the yo-yo. If you threw it out straight it should come back straight. Also remember to give some slack for landing.
Remember, forward pass, pull down and back, give some slack, then land. If you don't pull back and down, it'll just fly straight out. For anybody trying to learn off-string the throw and catch is the first major hurdle so practice it.
